Like me, you’ve probably seen plenty of “kids” in their 20s who quit their day jobs to travel the world. It sounds like an incredible life—way cooler than spending nearly 30 years practicing law. But here I am in my mid-fifties. Is it too late for me to have those same amazing travel experiences?
Spoiler Alert: Absolutely not.
Here’s a bold truth for you: When is the best time to plant a tree? The answer is 15 years ago. But when is the second best time to plant a tree? Right now! The same goes for travel. It’s never too late to make it happen. Sure, life gets in the way, kids, careers, and endless commitments. But we all tell ourselves, “Someday I’ll travel to [insert places from your Bucket List here].” The problem is, “someday” too often becomes never unless we take action now.

Symmetry, scale, and splendor standing above the legendary gardens of Versailles, it’s easy to feel the weight of royal history.
Maybe now is the perfect time to revisit those daydreams we put on hold. The ones we used to have before we convinced ourselves that travel is too expensive, too much of a time commitment, or just too complicated. The truth is, the time to act is now. We may not be getting any younger, but there’s plenty of adventure ahead if we’re ready to make it happen.
You may have told yourself that world travel is for the young or the rich. Let me share a little secret: Travel is for the ready. Sure, we need to save and plan, but there are also plenty of ways to earn points and miles that can make that First-Class ticket with champagne, caviar, and lie-flat beds a reality. It’s all about being prepared and seizing the opportunities that make travel affordable.

Nature’s abstract masterpiece - Yellowstone’s Mammoth Hot Springs feels like walking across the surface of another planet.
If you’re reading this (and made it all the way to the end of this post), chances are you’re ready to make these travel dreams a reality. So, let’s dive into the mindset shifts that can help make that happen:
- Travel Is Not Just for the Young, It’s for the Curious
Travel is not a privilege reserved for younger generations. It’s for anyone with a curious mind and a willingness to explore. Your experiences, your perspective, and your knowledge make every trip more meaningful. Age doesn’t limit your ability to discover the world; it enhances it. - You Don’t Have to Spend a Fortune to Travel in Comfort
Luxury travel isn’t reserved for the wealthy. With smart planning, loyalty programs, early bookings, and using points and miles, you can enjoy luxury experiences without breaking the bank. You don’t need to spend thousands on premium cabins or fancy hotels to feel pampered; it’s about finding ways to make those experiences affordable. - Slow Travel Is the New Adventure
Adventure doesn’t always mean hiking a volcano or racing through cities. Slow travel is about savoring the moment, taking your time to truly experience a place. It’s not about rushing from one activity to the next but about embracing the local culture, relaxing in a new environment, and finding joy in the details. As we get older, slow travel becomes an adventure in itself, one that’s richer and more fulfilling. - Travel Is for Learning, Not Just Escaping
When we’re younger, travel often feels like an escape, an opportunity to get away from the grind. But as we get older, travel becomes a chance to learn, grow, and enrich our lives. It’s about expanding our understanding of the world, soaking up new perspectives, and experiencing the cultures that make the world so interesting. Travel becomes less about escaping reality and more about embracing the opportunity to learn and grow. - You Don’t Need to “Do It All”
As we age, we often feel the need to do everything while traveling, see every monument, eat at every restaurant, visit every museum. But sometimes, the best memories come from letting go of that pressure. Embrace the idea that not every moment needs to be planned or executed perfectly. Travel is about the experiences you enjoy, not the ones you check off a list. - Physical Limitations Aren’t Barriers—They’re New Challenges
You may not be able to hike up the steepest mountain or run through a busy market as quickly as you could when you were younger, but that doesn’t mean you can’t travel. Embrace the challenges that come with aging and find ways to adjust your travel style to fit your needs. There are plenty of ways to travel comfortably, even if you have physical limitations, and many destinations are becoming increasingly accessible. - Travel Is a Reward, Not a Luxury
There’s often a belief that you can only travel if you’ve “earned it”, that it’s a luxury or indulgence. But the truth is, travel is a reward for all of us. It’s an investment in your happiness, well-being, and personal growth. At this stage of life, we’ve worked hard and built the foundation for our adventures. We’ve earned the right to travel in the ways that bring us joy and fulfillment. - Digital Tools Can Be Your Travel Superpower
Embrace technology to simplify your travel experience. Digital tools, apps for booking flights, managing itineraries, tracking points, and even getting local recommendations, can help streamline the process. It doesn’t take away from the authenticity of travel; it just makes it easier for us to enjoy the experience without the stress of logistics.

No words. Just wild, raw beauty. Watching elephants roam freely on safari in South Africa was a moment we’ll never forget.
So, now that you’re thinking about your next adventure, I challenge you to reflect on a belief you’ve held about travel. Maybe you’ve told yourself that traveling in your 50s or beyond is out of reach. Maybe you’ve convinced yourself that it’s just too late. But is it really?
I’d love to hear your thoughts. What beliefs have you challenged when it comes to travel? Have you found a way to make it happen despite the obstacles? Share your reflections in the comments below.
The world is waiting for you. The time is now. Let’s go see it!
